Entering Korean University

Types of Korean Universities

There are a total of approximately 400 universities in Korea, including 4-year universities, 2-year colleges, cyber universities, and special-purpose universities (as of 2022). Among these, there are about 300 universities that international students can enroll in: 200 4-year universities and 100 2-year colleges.

4-Year University

There are approximately 200 4-year universities in Korea. In general, the basic conditions such as the quality of faculty and school facilities at these universities are all good. Currently, almost 100% of professors at 4-year universities in Korea have doctoral degrees, and almost all universities have well-equipped dormitories for international students.

University evaluation: In Korea, various factors of 4-year universities are periodically surveyed, evaluated, and announced.

Certification by the Ministry of Education
Korea's Ministry of Education periodically evaluates universities, determines their suitability, and certifies them. Approximately 160 universities received accreditation in the 2022 assessment. All of these universities met certain standards and were confirmed to have no problems.
JoongAng Ilbo’s University Evaluation
JoongAng Ilbo, one of Korea's major newspapers, evaluates 4-year universities and announces rankings every year. Generally, university rankings are announced from 1st to 50th. The universities here can be said to be top-tier universities in all aspects.

2-Year College

There are about 150 two-year colleges in Korea. Even if it is a 2-year college, the basic conditions such as the quality of faculty and school facilities of these universities are no different from 4-year universities. However, the biggest difference is that the number of students is small and the focus is on technology-oriented education. Currently, most professors at 2-year colleges in Korea have doctoral degrees, and almost all universities have well-equipped dormitories for international students.

After graduating from a 2-year college, you can transfer to a 4-year university as a third-year student if you wish.

Admission Eligibility

High School Graduates: In order to enter a 2-year college or 4-year university in Korea, you must have grades and a diploma from 12 years of education until high school graduation.

TOPIK Score: TOPIK level 3 or higher is required. If you are conditionally admitted with a score lower than TOPIK level 3, you must complete a Korean language course and meet the TOPIK score required by the university until graduation.
English Score: Admission to schools that provide lectures in English can be done with a certified English score. Generally, IELTS 5.5 or higher or IBT TOEFL 71 or higher is required, but it varies by school.

Admission Time

Bachelor’s/Graduate Degree: Admission to the bachelor’s program and the master’s and doctoral programs is available twice a year, in semesters 1st semester starting on March 1 or 2nd semester starting on September 1.

Korean Language Training Course: Almost all universities operate a four-semester system per year (spring, summer, fall, winter).
